BACKGROUND:
ISOCARP and the Urban Planning Society of China (UPSC) have recently made an agreement which entails a Young Planning Professionals National Workshop, intended for Chinese and international young planners and being a part of the pre-congress activities.

OBJECTIVES  AND THEME OF THE WORKSHOP:
The workshop aims to provide young Chinese and international planners responsible for, or participating in, the shaping and development of settlements, with the principles and practices of effective contemporary urbanism and practical knowledge that will be of immediate use to each participant.

The objective of the workshop is to provide workshop participants with hands-on practical experiences. YPPs work in a studio setting under the guidance of two international experts from among the members of ISOCARP on a project site chosen jointly by ISOCARP, UPSC and representatives of the local partners from Guangzhou municipality and region. They will be accompanied by the ISOCARP Vice President responsible for the YPP program for the entire duration of their stay in Guangzhou. It is also intended to develop an example of the comprehensive (strategic) urban redevelopment  exercise for Chinese cities undergoing complex growth and transformation processes during recent years.

The theme of the workshop is associated with the regeneration of the large urban area, located in close proximity to the Guangzhou city center. This site was one of the pioneer areas leading Guangzhou prosperity in the early 19th century with all the trades related to the inner harbor, and famous for cultural heritage and traditional southern China architecture. Once a commercial and retail center currently under deterioration needs regeneration and redevelopment.

AUDIENCE:
