Three (3) key events for the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize were held successfully on 29 Jun 2010, at the recently concluded World Cities Summit 2010 in Singapore from 28 Jun 2010 to 1 Jul 2010. They were:
1. The Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize Lecture
The Prize Lecture is a platform for the sharing of the Prize Laureate’s achievements. The Mayor of Bilbao, Dr Iñaki Azkuna, shared the city's experiences in the transformation from an industrial city to a cultural and knowledge-based economy. He also focused on Bilbao’s challenges and innovations, the adoption of key strategies and projects that aided the city's transformation over the past 25 years and highlighted Bilbao's future plans. The lecture was moderated by Professor Kishore Mahbubani (Chair of the Prize Nominating Committee and Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore), and attracted more than 800 international and local dignitaries, policymakers and leading experts.
2. The World City Prize Forum
The Forum is a dedicated platform for the three (3) other finalists of the Prize to share their diverse experiences as important learning points in urban development.
The speakers for the Forum were:
• Dr Jamie Lerner (former Mayor of Curitiba and Governor of the State
of Parana, Brazil) (individual)
• Lord Mayor Robert Doyle, representing City of Melbourne, Australia
(organisation)
• Shri Keshav Chandra, Special Secretary to Chief Minister of Delhi,
representing Ms Sheila Dikshit (Chief Minister of Delhi, India)
(individual)
The Forum highlighted the context and challenges faced by the three (3) finalists and the urban solutions they have sought, and to celebrate their achievements in the creation of liveable, vibrant, and sustainable urban communities with a high quality of life. The speakers were joined by the Prize Laureate (represented by Dr Iñaki Azkuna, Mayor of Bilbao) and the moderator, Mrs Cheong Koon Hean, CEO(URA) for a panel discussion. The response for the Forum was overwhelming and attracted more than 400 people.
3. The Lee Kuan Yew Prize Award Ceremony and Banquet
The Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize award certificate, gold medallion and a cash prize of S$300,000 (sponsored by Keppel Corporation) were presented to Dr Iñaki Azkuna, Mayor of Bilbao at the Lee Kuan Yew Prize Award Ceremony and Banquet (which includes a Dialogue with Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, moderated by Chairman of the Nominating Committee Prof Kishore Mahbubani) at The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore. A commemorative video showcasing Bilbao’s achievements was also screened at the event. The by-invitation only event was well-attended by more than 650 international and local ministers, mayors and dignitaries.
The inaugural Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize would not have been possible without your strong support and assistance that you and your organisation have provided for the Prize. I would like to extend my deepest appreciation to you and ISOCARP in helping to make the inaugural Prize a tremendous success.
Moving forward, the Prize Secretariat will continue to widen our outreach and network in bid to garner a wide range of quality submissions for the next award cycle. We intend to continue to lobby the Prize at various platforms, including overseas conferences, roadshows and exhibitions. In this respect, we hope to once again seek your kind support and assistance should the opportunity arise.
Nominations for the Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize 2012 are now open.
