DSC06176BACKGROUND:
Since 1991 ISOCARP has organized – along with the annual congress – the Young Planning Professionals’ workshop, intended to stimulate the professional interests and the development of planning skills of the youngest members of the planners’ family. According to this tradition, the YPP workshop will be offered again during the 52nd ISOCARP congress that is to be held in Durban, South Africa. The workshop itself will take place between September 9th and 11th, and the final presentation will be on September 13th, during the first day of the congress. The workshop will be organized in partnership with University of Kwa Zulu Natal, which will be hosting the workshop participants.

OBJECTIVES AND THEME OF THE WORKSHOP:
The workshop aims to provide young planners responsible for or participating in the shaping and development of urban structures, with the principles and practices of effective contemporary urbanism and practical knowledge that will be of immediate use to each participant.

The objective of the workshop is to provide the workshop participants with hands-on practical experiences. YPPs work in a studio setting under the guidance of two international experts from among the members of ISOCARP. The project site will be chosen jointly by ISOCARP and the Local Organizing Committee.

The theme of the workshop reflects the general congress theme and will be adjusted in the course of the workshop preparations.

AUDIENCE:
The workshop is targeted at young professionals, up to 35 years old. They come from various backgrounds such as architecture, civil engineering, spatial science technology and real estate management.

CONTRIBUTION AND EXPENSES:

Tasks:
Each participant will spend 3 full days working with the YPP group during September 9th – 11th, 2016. The final presentation of the workshop results is intended for September 13th in the afternoon. Before and after, there may be a necessity of conducting meetings with local hosts and press. Therefore, all participants shall arrive on September 8th in the early afternoon AT LATEST and depart not earlier than September 17th in the morning – after the congress concludes.

IN ADDITION TO THE PARTICIPATION IN THE YPP WORKSHOP, 6 of the selected Young Planners will be offered an opportunity to become a Support Congress Team Member. This means that – both before and during the congress – they will be involved in the preparation and running of and reporting on the congress activities. This exceptional opportunity shall allow the Young Planners to get more seriously involved in the entire congress.

Expenses:
The cost of modest accommodation and meals during the workshop as well as local transportation during the workshop will be covered by the organizers. However, ISOCARP will not be able to provide any assistance with respect to travel expenses. The selected workshop participants will be asked to arrange the trip on their own and not arrive in Durban later than Sept. 8th in the afternoon.  Departures should be scheduled not earlier than September 17th in the morning. Participants are also welcome to stay in South Africa longer and to participate in the other congress activities as well as in the post-congress tour on their own cost.

Selected workshop participants will be asked to arrange the INTERNATIONAL trip on their own. PLEASE CONSULT YOUR TRAVEL PLANS IN ADVANCE WITH VP YPP Piotr Lorens.

PLEASE NOTE THAT EACH YPP WORKSHOP PARTICIPANT HAS TO BEAR THE CONGRESS FEE, which – although reduced as per normal price – still has to be paid.
