The Student Award (SA) addresses a bachelor and/or master student or student-group with outstanding results in a related field to urban and regional planning. As a form of ISOCARP’s recognition of the efforts by future planning professionals, the award is bestowed for final design projects, theses, studio projects, etc.

In 2017, four SA entries covering various aspects related to the congress topic “Smart Communities” were submitted:

  2. Dockville, by Jan Hoyer
  3. Building Zone and Public Transport: What Planning Integration at Corridor Level?, by Yannick Riedo
  4. Smart Governance, by Katarina Stojkovic et al.

The jury composed of two young planners, one experienced ISOCARP member, an Executive Committee member and a Scientific Committee member, i.e. Lena Niel (the Netherlands) and Divya Chopra (India) as YPPs, Ana Maria Fernandez Maldonado (the Netherlands), Martin Dubbeling, VP UPATs (the Netherlands) and Benjamin Scheerbarth (Germany), the SC member and the jury president, selected the following entries as winners:

 

SA Winner:

Jan HOYER, Dockville
A very relevant design proposition in a setting that is representative of similar postindustrial conditions in many cities across the world. In an era of growing urbanisation, contemporary spatial challenges need to be addressed by re-looking at our existing city spaces and systems rather than imagining outward growth. The strategy for revitalisation of this precinct is very well articulated in terms of typological insertions, programmatic content and phasing of the overall project.

Yannick RIEDO, Building Zone and Public Transport: What Planning Integration at Corridor Level?
This master thesis uses a combination of planning skills in an effort to integrate building zones with public transport systems: knowledge about the impact of planning regulations and the legal system, knowledge about transport planning, and technical knowledge of GIS to analyse the different situations. The method to estimate the planning integration between building zones and public transport system is carefully constructed, making thus the proposed approach a very good tool to achieve a more sustainable spatial development.
