SUMMARY:ISOCARP International Regional Event #1 @ REAL CORP21
DESCRIPTION:IRE # 1 is the first of a series of experiences realized through this new ISOCARP tool for meeting and exchange ideas between professionals in urban planning. A symposium among experts that aims to bring global issues closer to specific macro-regional contexts: On the occasion of this first IRE we start from the macro-regional context of Europe\, the next ones will address other macro-regions of the world. The IRE combines global considerations with the local context\, associating “macro” reflections\, policies and strategies\, with the implementation context and practices (plans and tools): The needs of the “micro”. \nThis first IRE experience will take place in Vienna from 7 to 10 September 2021. The event will be in person\, unless there are impediments related to the pandemic. In every case\, the event will be broadcasted online as well. It will be realized in a hybrid form (someone online\, someone in person) in order to facilitate the participation of those that cannot travel to Vienna. \nRegister and submit your abstract by 19/07/2021! \nThese are the three topics that we will address together in the symposium: \n\nDesigning and planning the post-pandemic city. Which planning contexts have priority? How to design hybrid models (places\, functions\, governance models\, city platforms…) for planning the post covid city? How to make paths of urban innovation sustainable?\nNature Based Solutions as a way to shape a sustainable future for our cities. How to make theme effective to promote sustainable urban development and launching coherent and stable processes of urban regeneration?\nCulture and Culture Heritage (C&CH) can make the difference in the transition towards the “New Normal”. How do can culture and C&CH can promote new sustainable economies in the city? How to place cultural heritage in the context of current urban policies? What is the role of local communities? How to harmonise\, protect\, use and enhance the cultural heritage in the contemporary city?\n\nZOOMING IN \nAdditionally\, a special consideration that takes us to the heart of the problems of EU contemporaneity: What does cross border planning mean in theoretically borderless territories (Schengen Area)? This last special session\, coordinated by ISOCARP SG Frank D’hondt\, invites planners to exchange and discuss recent practices and research to overcome and prevent negative externalities of national borders on any kind of cross-border and transnational urban area. The session will provide a good opportunity to learn from and exchange ideas on the particular case of the so-called Eurodelta – the potential 40 million transnational and polycentric megalopolis comprised of the nearly contiguous urban area of the Low Countries (BeNeLux)\, Western Germany\, Northern France and even across the channel towards the Thames Gateway. Discussions can focus on both the internal territorial cohesion and collaboration\, as well on the global benchmarking and exchange with other megalopolises in mainly Asia and America\, bearing the potential to explore ‘planning the future megalopolises’. \nFOCUSSING ON THE KEY TOPICS \nMoreover\, we are very proud to inform you that on the occasion of this first IRE\, we will have a special event with EU international experts relating on the topics of Nature Based Solutions and Cultural Heritage. Our guests will hold five inspiring keynotes: \n \nGrowing new roots for the city: Nature Based Solutions as the future of planning for the planet. SUMMARY:REAL CORP 2021
DESCRIPTION:REAL CORP 2021\nCITIES 20.50 – CREATING HABITATS FOR THE 3RD MILLENNIUM\nSMART – SUSTAINABLE – CLIMATE NEUTRAL \nSeptember 7-10\, 2021\nVienna \nUrbanisation of the world is progressing rapidly and seems to be an unstoppable process. According to current forecasts\, more than 6 billion people will live in cities in 2050. Compared to 1950\, this is almost a tenfold increase in 100 years\, resulting from global population growth and the continuing influx of people into urban areas. As a rule\, population growth also means additional land requirements. Urban growth often takes place across administrative borders\, cities grow into their surrounding areas\, (cross-border) urban and metropolitan regions emerge and also influence the development of rural areas\, where in turn numerous initiatives for independent sustainable development emerge. \nThis dynamic development is accompanied by enormous challenges for the organisation and maintenance of urban processes\, particularly in the areas of technical and social infrastructure\, affordable housing\, mobility\, recreation\, security of supply\, etc. Sustainability\, resilience and smartness are essential characteristics of cities and regions and are often compared by means of benchmarks. The key question is how quality of life can be maintained and improved in the face of dynamic development of living space. \nEven though the world is currently under the spell of the COVID-19 pandemic\, it is clear that climate and environmental issues will be decisive for urban development in the coming decades. Climate adaptation strategies will play a central role\, because especially in cities\, high density\, increasing land sealing\, lack of greenery and inadequate ventilation increasingly lead to the formation of urban heat islands and the problem of urban warming. \nHow can urban and spatial planning and all related disciplines contribute to maintaining urban flows\, functioning infrastructure and preserving and improving the quality of life? How can urban and rural living spaces actively cross-fertilise each other’s development? \nREAL CORP invites for contributions from all areas of expertise to gain a holistic and multi-faceted view on challenges and future scenarios in the urban realm. Next to science-based contributions we also welcome practise-based reports on short term actions and/or long-term strategies on urban and regional development. \nWe will reflect on the global COVID crisis in a special track\, asking for contributions dealing with human well-being\, public health\, blue and green as critical infrastructure and the role of planning and mitigating strategies before\, during and after the pandemic. \nHere are the main topics REAL CORP 2021 is going to deal with: \n\nApproaching the Big Challenges\nUrban Lifestyles\nReal Estate Development and Settlement Patterns (affordable\, mixed\, resource-optimised)\nTransportation and Mobility (multi-modal\, climate neutral\, resource-efficient)\nEnergy (Extraction\, Consumption\, Distribution/Storage\, Management)\nPublic Space\, Blue-Green Infrastructure\nTechnological Innovation and its Impact on Cities (5G\, IoT\, blockchain\, digital twin\, AI\, VR\, 3D printing\, robots\, BIM\, gaming\, …)\nPost-Carbon Economy and a more Ecological Economy and Society\nSocial Innovation\n\nThere are also some special topics which REAL CORP 2021 presents in close co-operation with the respective partners mentioned: \n\nUrban Climate Adaptation Strategies and Affordability of Life: How can that work? (partner: IBA Vienna)\nEU Mission: Climate Neutral and Smart Cities (partners: BMK\, AustriaTech)\nIntegrated Spatial and Energy Planning (partner: IRUB/BOKU)\nCross-Border Spatial Development (partner: RWTH Aachen)\nDisasters\, Emergencies\, Epidemics and the Role of Planning\n\nDeadline for abstract submission: March 15\, 2021 \nFor more information on how to register\, click here.

SUMMARY:Network launch: “Acclimating post-mining territories”
DESCRIPTION:Creation of the international network “Acclimating post-mining territories” architecture\, landscape\, design \nIn partnership with European Cultural Center and its exhibition “Time\, Space\, Existence”\, the Partnership Chair “Acclimating post-mining territories” is organizing a day of meeting and brainstorming aimed at creating an international network. The Chair is headed by Lille’s School of Architecture and Landscape (ENSAPL). \nThe network will focus on the future of former mining territories in their spatial\, socio-economic\, ecological\, landscape\, or even aesthetic dimensions. Its ambition is to bring together research teams\, educators\, and other stakeholders from all over the world\, involved in the fields of design (architecture\, urban planning\, landscape\, art\, etc.). Its objective\, in particular\, is to develop design and research tools that will involve local communities.Three areas of work and reflection are proposed: \n– Heritage quality and architectural innovation regards to climate adaptation \n– Territorialist project \n– New architectural and landscape languages: bio-based materials\, phytoremediation \nThis study day is open to all those working on possible ways of repairing landscapes and post-mining societies. A special attention will be given to the teams that develop projects with local communities and the territory’s own resources. We welcome the academics\, educators\, artists\, architects\, urban planners\, landscape architects\, but also anthropologists\, sociologists\, geographers\, all those who work to acclimatize post-mining territories. \nBeing that the number of attendees is limited\, the remote interventions are welcome. \nThis day will be accompanied by a creative and participatory students workshop entitled “Infinite resources\, new building materials” organized with the University of Venice. \nRegister for participation: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/scientific-international-network-post-mining-network-tickets-158593618783 \nSee the programme of the event here!
