SUMMARY:REAL CORP 2024: CALL FOR PAPERS
DESCRIPTION:29th International Conference on Urban Planning and Regional Development in the Information Society GeoMultimedia 2024\n\nThe Call for Papers is open \nSince the beginning of industrialisation\, the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has been steadily increasing due to human influences. Currently\, an increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere of almost 50 percent compared to the level of pre-industrialisation has been recorded. Without taking into account the increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere\, the observed warming of the climate system cannot be explained. The problem of climate change is therefore caused by humanity itself and can therefore be counteracted by humanity itself. However\, this is a long-term process with a high investment of resources with very limited immediate\, short-term results – so it seems little wonder that it is only getting off the ground very slowly. \nIt is\, therefore\, all the more important to take selective countermeasures wherever possible. If measures against climate change are combined with modern technologies\, additional short-term effects can be achieved\, such as an increase in the (urban) quality of life\, a mitigation of traffic problems or savings through reduced resource consumption. These and other aspects can be achieved under the umbrella of the Smart City\, and Mannheim has decided to become a Smart City and is on a successful way: as the first German city\, Mannheim received the #EUMissionLabel as part of the “100 climate neutral and smart cities by 2030” programme by the EU Commission. \nBut what does this step mean for the citizens on the one hand\, and for planning and administration on the other? Smart Cities use the potential of digital technologies and intelligent data networks to increase the quality of life  simultaneously moving into the future in a resource-saving and efficient way. \nSmart cities collect vast amounts of data\, which can be used to inform policy making and city planning leading to more effective urban and regional governance. Also the economic aspect must be considered as Smart Cities can attract investments and businesses\, creating job opportunities and stimulating economic growth. They can also foster innovation and entrepreneurship through technology hubs and incubators. This contributes to the development of services by delivering public services more efficiently\, such as healthcare\, education\, and public safety. This enhances the overall well-being of residents and can contribute to social development. \nConference Topics \n\nContributions of Urban and Spatial Planning to Tackle the Big Challenges of the Future\nSmart City in General: Use and Benefits of Smart City Strategies\nSmart Mobility: Enhancing Today’s Mobility Systems for Tomorrow\nSmart Resilience: How to Prepare our Cities for New Challenges\nSmart Efficiency: On Responsible and Economical Use of Resources\nSmart Technologies and Information Infrastructure: What lies Behind the Agendas of a Smart City and Keeps it Running\nArtificial Intelligence in Urban and Spatial Planning\nNature-Based Solutions: How Natural Mechanisms can be Used in Smart Cities and Urban Planning\nSmart City Shapes: Adoptive\, Multi-Functional Urban Spaces for a better Quality of Life\nFighting Climate Change: the Environmental Impact of Planning – from Urban Microclimates and Heat Islands to Long-term\, Large-scale Measures\nUrban Regeneration and Revitalisation: Making older Urban Quarters Fit for the Future\nPublic Well-Being: How to Increase Well-being and Satisfaction of the Population\nThe Urban and the Country Side: What can they Learn from Each Other?\nAccessible Cities and Spaces: Not only a Benefit for People with Disabilities\nSpecial Topic: Ageing Smart – Designing Spaces Intelligently\nSpecial Topic: Deployment of Smart City Technologies in Africa\n\nFor all these topics REAL CORP 2024 asks especially about \n\nThe role of urban planning and related disciplines\nDigitisation and technological innovation\nShort term measures\, long range perspectives\nOngoing research\, new ideas\, best practise examples\, case studies\n\n\nTimeline \nSubmission of abstract until 30 December 2023Feedback on general acceptance until 15 January 2024Full paper for reviewing has to be submitted until 8 February 2024Double blind full paper review until 29 February 2024Final version of full paper for publication until 31 March 2024 \n(The final full paper for non-reviewed submissions needs to be handed in by 29 February 2024.) \nRegistration \nTo register and submit your abstract\, please go to https://my.corp.at and sign up for conference participation. SUMMARY:International Conference: Transforming Cities – Shaping Development Policies
DESCRIPTION:Registration and contact\nParticipation in the conference is free of charge\, but registration is required\nPlease register until this Sunday\, October\, 22nd: > the registration form \n\nAbout the Conference\nContemporary urban development processes are associated mostly with the transformation of existing structures. These may include such topics as radical reuse concepts for various areas\, including ones dominated by traffic\, regeneration and redevelopment of abandoned areas and brownfield sites\, as well as the transformation of various types of public and common spaces. Of course\, these are just a few from a wide array of topics that shape current discourse on the future of cities. Many will argue that equally important are environmental\, social\, and economic issues\, dealing with inequalities as well as – on the other side – with the physical shape of urban architecture. The wide scope of these topics proves that we are still in search of a true new planning agenda for our cities and that its character may differ depending on the character and location of the city.\nThe main purpose of organizing the conference on „Transforming Cities” is to present and discuss currently debated and practiced planning concepts that will shape the future of our urban spaces. The intention is to invite practitioners (planners and urban designers)\, municipal leaders (city architects\, and planners)\, academicians\, and other professionals dealing with diverse planning\, design and development issues. Such a debate shall allow understanding how to deal with various issues and problems as well as how to put these in the broader context – both regarding the interdisciplinary character of the issue and best practices derived from the experience of other parts of the world. \nThe conference program will include several sessions\, including: \n\nKeynote presentations – dealing with the shape of our current urban agenda and general overview of planning practice\nBroder reflection session – bringing together various perspectives on urban transformation processes\nTransformation of the traffic-dominated urban spaces – reintroducing public life\, greenery\, reshaping urban structures – with a focus on historic urban areas;\nRedevelopment of centrally located urban brownfield areas – reinterpreting urban structures\, reusing heritage buildings and spaces\, developing connections with the surrounding urban areas\, shaping new development visions in relation to existing urban structures;\nShaping the new\, transit-oriented\, development spines of the cities – reshaping the urban development visions on the basis of the TOD (transit-oriented development) concept\, introducing the new development concepts for housing-dominated areas\, redefining the future of areas dominated by the big-box type of commercial structures;\n\nThe intention is to make this conference a venue for exchanging good practices and reassuring the key stakeholders in efforts associated with refining the local planning practices. At the same time\, this will serve as an opportunity to discuss various development issues in the example of the City of Gdańsk. \n\nOrganisation\nThe event is hosted jointly by the City of Gdansk\, Gdańsk University of Technology\, and the Society of Polish Town Planners. At the same time\, this will become an ISOCARP (International Society of City and Regional Planners) Regional Event. Among others\, the members of the Global Planners Network as well as of the European Council of Town Planners (ECTP) will be participating in it.

SUMMARY:28th International Conference on Urban Planning and Regional Development in the Information Society - GeoMultimedia 2023
DESCRIPTION:A constantly growing world (around 8 billion people now\, 9.7 billion to be expected by 2050 [1]) with constantly expanding cities and urban agglomerations is facing various challenges such as scarcity of resources\, infrastructure provision security\, risk of disasters\, global warming or ageing of the population. These topics have to be seen as global challenges which are unevenly distributed across the world regarding the dynamics of those phenomena and their geogeaphic location. \nAre Nature-Based Solutions the key to liveable\, sustainable\, resilient cities even under the threats of climate change? Is it just about greening the cities and their green and blue infrastructures? What is the context of their technological developments and social innovation? \nWhat are Nature-Based Solutions (NBS)? The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) defines them as actions to protect\, sustainably manage\, and restore natural or modified ecosystems. These actions address societal challenges effectively and adaptively\, and simultaneously provide human well-being and biodiversity benefits with common societal challenges. [2\, 3] Another perspective of NBS is solutions that use ecological and environmental services to address contemporary environmental\, social and economic challenges. [4] \nNBS are definitely being understood well beyond greenery or only biotic nature. There are strong relations with topics such as liveability\, social cohesion and human activities\, and urban planning\, architecture and design as key disciplines. Thus\, beside green and blue (water) infrastructure as currently the most often addressed manifestation of NBS in cities\, REAL CORP 2023 suggests to reflect also on the physical processes and materials (abiotic nature) as inevitable parts of nature. These can bes seen in connection with parameters of urban planning\, such as morphology\, land use\, availability of space for (land) use occupancy etc. These physical world processes are also part of nature\, especially as the properties of locations and sites that may well dictate their further development as well as the selection of suitable NBS for implementation at these specific locations. \nNBS that directly use natural processes (e. g. natural terrain with high vegetation\, which in urban areas is most often associated with a park)\, especially in dense urban patterns\, are generally more difficult to implement due to spatial as well as economic constraints. NBS that may be more appropriate in such situations may come from a set of ideas and proposals that “mimic” nature. Here\, it is important to note that nature is made up of both biotic and abiotic components. For example\, in terms of reducing the occurrence of heat islands in cities\, solutions can be found in the selection of suitable building materials and their appropriate treatment\, appropriate physical characteristics of the components of abiotic nature\, optimum orientation of buildings and their compositions on the sites\, as this can influence the natural ventilation of the rooms (micro scale) or area (macro scale). \nOther open questions include ways in which NBS can be addressed in various spatial planning documents and processes and how can the capabilities of NBS be used in effective policy making and implementation. \nAt REAL CORP 2023 we would like to highlight the following main topics: \n\nUrban Design and Planning Driven by Nature-Based Solutions (NBS)\nUrban Morphology and Landscape\nAdoptive Architecture and Multifunctional Spaces\nUrban Regeneration\nSystems of Green and Blue Infrastructure\nSustainable Resources and Infrastructure Management\nUrban Agriculture\nThe Human Scale and Quality of Life (also in the Context of an Ageing Society)\nPublic Health and Well-Being\nClimate Change Mitigation and Adaptation\, Air Quality Improvement\nUrban Heat Islands and Urban Microclimate\nUrban Policy\nSocially Sustainable and Responsible Mobility\nLessons Learnt from Covid-19 – Post-Pandemic Perspectives\nCo-Creation and Community Engagement (especially Engaging Underrepresented and Marginalized Communities)\nData and Information Infrastructure – an Indispensable Prerequisite for Managing Cities and Regions\n\nFor all these topics REAL CORP 2023 asks especially about \n\nThe role of urban planning and related disciplines\nDigitisation and technological innovation\nShort term measures\, long range perspectives\nOngoing research\, new ideas\, best practise examples\, case studies\n\nTimeline \nSubmission of abstract until 15 April 2023\nFeedback on general acceptance until 30 April 2023\nFull paper for reviewing has to be submitted until 15 June 2023\nDouble blind full paper review until 15 July 2023\nFinal version of full paper for publication until 31 August 2023 \n(The final full paper for non-reviewed submissions needs to be handed in by 31 July 2023.) \nRegistration \nTo register and submit your abstract\, please go to https://my.corp.at and sign up for conference participation. SUMMARY:CNU31 - Charlotte
DESCRIPTION:The Congress for the New Urbanism is thrilled to bring our 31st annual Congress to one of the most diverse\, vibrant cities in the American Southeast with deep roots in new urbanism – the Queen City of Charlotte\, North Carolina. \nAs the 15th largest city in the country\, Charlotte will be the first city in North Carolina to host the Congress. As the third fastest growing region in the country\, Greater Charlotte has the benefit of beautiful\, John Nolen-designed neighborhoods\, thriving mill villages\, many completely built new urbanist projects\, and new urban transit-oriented development neighborhoods that have added over 50\,000 housing units in 10 years. \nCharlotte is a city that is on the move\, aggressively working to address economic mobility and affordable housing with public-private partnerships and new regulatory tools. With the recent adoption of the Charlotte Future 2040 Comprehensive Plan\, CNU 31’s host city is ready for implementation and action – one of the great skills of New Urbanists. \nBelmont\, Davidson\, Huntersville\, Cornelius\, Birkdale Village\, Baxter Village\, Antiquity\, First Ward\, Vermillion – all first-generation New Urbanist developments and towns with form based codes since the early 1990s. The Charlotte region offers long time CNU members the ability to check in and see their progress and talk with the developers and implementers who were the early authors and designers of the projects. For first-time attendees\, this will provide them with insight into the transformational work that New Urbanists have been doing for decades. \nAnd within 2 hours of Charlotte are towns and cities that are implementing New Urbanism – Asheville\, High Point\, Greensboro\, Columbia\, Rock Hill and the list goes on. From the nearby town leadership to small and large development organizations and placemaking non-profits the Charlotte region is ready for action. \nWith several billion dollars invested in transportation to support walkability\, the Charlotte community is committed to walkable urbanism. Not only is there a longstanding tradition of New Urbanist design in the region\, Charlotte is also incorporating new urbanist principles into its current growth and development patterns. The explosion of growth and the future of walkable urbanism in Charlotte will be on full display at CNU 31. With over 10\,000 new residential units at the South End light rail station areas alone and over 3.8 billion dollars of investment in its first transit corridor – all walkable urbanism – there’s a lot to showcase! \nAfter the success of our first in-person Congress since the start of the pandemic\, the Congress for the New Urbanism is thrilled to bring our movement to one of the most diverse\, vibrant cities in the American Southeast with deep roots in new urbanism. Please join us from May 31 to June 3\, 2023 for CNU 31.Charlotte!

SUMMARY:17th AESOP Young Academics Conference: Cities Planning for Action: Making sustainable transformations of cities and territories happen
DESCRIPTION:  \nMarch 28-31\, 2023 \nAntwerp\, Belgium \nThe 17th AESOP Young Academics Conference will take place from 28 to 31 March 2023 in Antwerp\, Belgium. The conference will be hosted by young academics of the Research group for Urban Development at the University of Antwerp’s Faculty of Design Sciences. \nCities and regions in every part of the world are being challenged by evolutions of which the pace is rapidly increasing\, and the impacts and outcomes are more uncertain than ever. Climate change\, growing urban populations\, migration flows\, technological revolutions\, the digitalization of economies and everyday life\, growing inequalities\, geopolitical shifts\, increasing polarization\, and increasing diversity. Additionally\, the Covid pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war have alerted us about the global\, national\, and local impact of disruptive events. The time for action is immediate as pressure on cities and territories is increasing because of these challenges. Sustainable transformations are required to ensure there is space and opportunity for both people and natural species to live and thrive in the near and far future. Planning and other disciplines have spoiled us with a rich body of literature that helps understand the way forward\, but we need to turn theory into practice through planning for action. \nWe invite young academics and practitioners of all relevant disciplines and welcome contributions that have an action oriented or applied perspective\, as an opportunity to learn about innovative approaches and methods\, empirical studies\, the impact of research on practice\, and research that actively engages with communities\, practitioners\, private sector stakeholders\, and policy makers. \nWe offer five tracks to which you can contribute. The submission deadline is 7 November 2022. \nTrack 1: Upscaling and delivering sustainable transformations. Implementation and governance \nTrack 2: Flows of people and goods: Active and inclusive mobility in cities and territories \nTrack 3: Healthy and resilient cities and territories: Impact and design \nTrack 4: Complex and unpredictable cities and territories: Planning approaches and institutions  \nTrack 5: Action-oriented research to make sustainable transformations happen: Research methods\n \nFor more information\, please click on the banner https://www.uantwerpen.be/en/conferences/aesopya2023/call/ \n

SUMMARY:FLEXIBLE PLANNING IN SEARCH FOR INNOVATIVE PLANNING INSTRUMENTS
DESCRIPTION:Conference Outline \nNowadays urban development processes get much more diversified than in even recent past. At the same time\, contemporary planning discourse mainly focuses on goals and principles of sustainable transformation and not so much on implementation instruments. This relates to both the mode of discussing possible planning and development solutions and to the implementation models and mechanisms. And even if some issues are debated and tested in different contexts\, like spurring participation and involvement of all stakeholders in the planning and development processes\, these are not part of the formal processes and procedures. This comes – among others – from the fact that we are still in search of the best possible\, innovative\, and responding to the current needs\, planning instruments\, which are not codified and have not become part of the planning system yet. \nThe main purpose of organizing the conference on „Flexible Planning” is to present and discuss currently debated and practiced planning instruments that go beyond formalized procedures. The intention is to invite practitioners (planners and urban designers)\, municipal leaders (mayors\, city architects\, and planners)\, academicians\, and other professionals dealing with shaping innovative instruments that can deal with specific problems and issues in urban development. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe conference program will include several sessions\, including: \n\n  Keynote presentations – dealing with both contemporary principles of urban development and practices associated with planning and development processes\n  Analyses of lessons learned from various informal planning undertakings – workshops\, seminars\, discussions\, etc.\n  Discussions on key issues for contemporary planning practice – including participation and co-creation processes\n  Reflections on interrelations between design and planning principles\, planning methods\, and implementation practices. The intention is to make this conference a venue for exchanging good practices and reassuring the key stakeholders in efforts associated with refining the local planning practices. SUMMARY:18nth International Conference on Urban Health- ICUH
DESCRIPTION:18nth International Conference on Urban Health- ICUH\n24-27 October\, 2022 | Valencia Spain\nThe 18nth International Conference on Urban Health (ICUH) is an annual initiative of the International Society of Urban Health (ISUH).\nISOCARP supports this event as a Conference Partner. \nThere is a growing body of urban health research and evidence\, yet gaps exist in knowledge generation\, translation\, and application for urban design and health practice. In this context\, the International Conference on Urban Health serves as a key convergence point to advance and support the generation\, exchange\, and application of urban health programs and policies. Through the Conference and program activities\, the ISUH serves as a platform for interdisciplinary academic researchers and educators\, practitioners and policymakers from multiple sectors in government and the private sector. \nThe theme for ICUH 2022 is Growing Our Global Community. Driving Action. Ensuring Equity. During this year’s conference\, we aim to connect all global stakeholders working within the urban health realm to drive action and ensure equity across cities and regions. We will explore how urban health can connect with other urban and global agendas\, such as climate change\, planetary health and sustainable development. We will explore models for engagement and empowerment\, prioritizing and defining equity across communities\, how biodiversity and natural elements can play a role in healthy urban futures\, and ways to reduce climate impacts for all. \nConference Themes\n\nUrban Natural Environments & Ecosystem (nature and promotion of health in cities)\nUrban Health Pathways (generating evidence that sheds light on the drivers of urban health that are still emerging)\nTransforming Urban Environments for Health (turning evidence into practice: implementation science\, policy\, governance strategies\, interventions\, innovations\, partnerships and networks)\nMaking it Happen (Mechanisms for supporting health and wellbeing in urban environments) \nBuilding Equitable Cities for All (empowering vulnerable and excluded populations\, addressing health disparities\, informality\, environmental and health justice)\nEvidence and Practice from Valencia and Spain (local contributions on the above topics or new locally relevant topics) \n\nFinal Deadline for Abstract and Proposal Submissions\, May 31st\nFor more information and Submissions find the link here.

SUMMARY:Healthy City Design 2022
DESCRIPTION:Healthy City Design 2022\nThe Next Frontier: Valuing diversity\, inclusivity and opportunity\nOctober 10-11\, 2022\nLondon\, UK\nThe next frontier’ will see new amalgams of expertise and knowledge addressing the vital questions around inclusion and diversity in the professional disciplines in design\, technology\, urbanism and health. Business organisations will lean into the city as part of their ESG (environmental\, social and governance) commitments. Architects and engineers will plan for the complexity that comes with including a wider range of needs and desires. Public health experts will pilot a fresh approach\, and technology providers will seize the moment. \nFor our 2022 Congress\, we’re interested in receiving proposals for papers\, posters and workshops in the spheres of practice\, research and policy that capture key elements of this dynamic picture. We want to look at inclusive ideas and initiatives in relation to such topics as homes and neighbourhoods\, work and workplace\, public space and urban design\, climate and community\, transport and mobility\, and smart cities and healthcare services. \nPrevious editions of the Healthy City Design International Congress have looked at creating a shared culture of wellness\, reducing health inequalities\, building resilience in cities\, and dealing with the impact of Covid-19. In 2022\, we pull all of these themes together and ask: how can design for inclusion\, diversity and social equity support healthier lives in a thriving urban realm? \nFor additional information\, please visit the website.
