SUMMARY:WOMEN AND PLANNING: FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE
DESCRIPTION:The ways in which we can better consider the needs of women and girls when planning our towns and cities is a subject that has been gathering increasing interest both in planning academia and practice. Questions are being asked as to what planning can do to make practice more inclusive\, and planners are increasingly interested in how this can be applied to their own work. It is in the context that the Women and Planning: From Theory to Practice conference welcomes academics and practitioners to come to Leeds\, UK and explore this.\n\nIn 2019\, Leeds Beckett University hosted the Women and Planning Conference. This sought to build on the earlier women and planning work undertaken in the UK in the 80s-early 2000s with key actions such as The Women’s Design Service and Matrix architects (Berglund with Wallace\, 2016)\, the insights of academics (Greed\, 1994; Little\, 1994) and attempts to include gender mainstreaming in planning practice (Greed\, 2005; Reeves\, 2002; RTPI\, 2003; Reeves et al.\, 2023). The conference recognised a burgeoning interest in the issues again with the founding of Women in Planning and Urbanistas in 2012\, online materials from the RTPI and broader discussions of gender mainstreaming (Sanchez de Madariaga and Roberts\, 2013; Sanchez de Madariaga and Neuman\, 2016) and gender and the rights to the city (Beebeejaun\, 2017). The conference sought to (re)invigorate this conversation\, including both academics and practitioners and led to a special edition of Town Planning Review featuring papers from the conference (Horwood\, 2022). Horwood et al. (2022) made the case for the need to bring practitioners and academics together\, to cultivate a conversation across boundaries where expertise and experience is shared to move planning practice forward. \nInterest in women and the built environment more broadly has\, and is continuing to grow\, with moves to the mainstream in the UK (Criado-Perez\, 2019; Kern\, 2020\, Make Spaces for Girls\, 2024). There is work ongoing to apply this to planning practice\, for example with the declaration of Glasgow as a feminist city (GCC\, 2022)\, and work in London and West Yorkshire (GLA\, 2022; LLDC\, 2021; WYCA\, 2023). Planning consultancies and public bodies have also produced reports (Arup\, 2022; UN 2021) and lobbied Government (Turley\, 2023). Outside of the UK\, there are more examples to learn from (Dutton et al\, 2022). With this\, we have started to see welcome moves towards moving from theory to practice. \nOur audience \nThis conference is firmly located in the intersection between academia and practice as it is only through this connection that we can work together to develop inclusive practice.  The conference welcomes anyone with an interest in women and planning\, from academia and practice\, across all levels and sectors. We will bring together academics and practitioners (and those in-between) to explore the current research and practice landscape in women and planning. \nContent \nFinal speakers and sessions will be confirmed once abstract submissions have closed and been finalised. We expect there to be papers from academics and practitioners researching women and planning\, papers from relevant practitioners about their practice\, panels of both practitioners and academics exploring current practice\, historical practice\, the role of practitioners and insights into how practice can become more inclusive. \nPublication \nWe are currently in the final stages of organising a special edition of an academic journal featuring papers from the conference.  In 2019 papers from the conference were published in a special edition of Town Planning Review which can be viewed open access here: Contents | Town Planning Review 93\, 6 (liverpooluniversitypress.co.uk) \nWe are also in discussions for practice focused publication and communication of the conference materials.

SUMMARY:1st International Conference for New Cities "Planning New Regenerative Cities "
DESCRIPTION:In a digitalising world with circular economy\, expectations for sustainably humanised and healthy cities and environments are increasing. For urban and regional planners\, there is an opportunity and professional responsibility to take a more robust approach to cities through new settlements or redevelopment strategies. Although coined 14 years ago by the World Future Council\, a German non-profit foundation\, regenerative cities are more contextual to be discussed or revisited\, especially when we are now under triple planetary crisis and in fast digital transformation. What we can learn from the past\, on-going\, and near future city development will enrich the current stock of knowledge to navigate our future. \nIn New Clark City\, about 100km northwest of Manila’s megalopolis in the Philippine Tarlac region\, ISOCARP and the Local Organising Committee welcome the entire international planning community to explore the challenges and opportunities of planning for sustainable new cities that are healthy\, inclusive\, compact\, regenerative and embed circular economy\, carbon-neutral energy supplies\, and nature-based solutions\, while fostering sustainable connectivity and complementarity with existing cities in the region\, and with Manila Metro in particular. \nA particular focus is to explore New Clark City as inspiring practice of regenerating a former military base – aspiring to new concepts of brownfield development. The conference will also explore climate adaptive resilience planning approaches for new (and existing) cities vulnerable to climate change – from drought to floods – and natural risks such as volcanic and seismic activity. Last but not least\, the conference will highlight the cultural diversity of the hosting region\, as inspiration to blend past traditions\, present practices and future innovations into smart new city planning and development\, through inclusion of the indigenous population of the Aetas who had historical stewardship of domains part of the New Clark City development  area. \nWhile the conference location is hinting to a regional focus on new city development in the fast-urbanising Asian part of the Global South\, ISOCARP’s 60th World Planning Congress Diamond Anniversary Series will ensure a historical perspective by connecting New Clark City with grand old new city planning concepts such as Ebenezer Howard’s Garden City (1902)\, as well with the latest planning developments in and around the medieval Italian town of Siena\, hosting the grand finale of the 60th World Planning Congress Diamond Anniversary Series. \nRegister now

SUMMARY:Call for Entries of the 22nd LivCom SDG Awards
DESCRIPTION:The Finals of the 22nd International Awards for Liveable Communities/LivCom Awards will be held in Cairo\, Egypt in early November 2024. After joint confirmation by the Egyptian Government and UN-Habitat\, the LivCom Finals will be organized as a parallel event of the 12th World Urban Forum (WUF12)\, lasting for 4 days and including the Finals Presentations\, the International Forum on Building Smart and Liveable Cities\, a technical conference and a training session.  \nLivCom Committee will be partnering with multiple UN Agencies and international organizations\, in particularly ISOCARP\, UNCRD\, UN-INIA\, UNESCO\, etc. Relevant organizations from EU\, the League of Arab States and UNU systems are expected to join in the cooperation subsequently.  \nAs LivCom’s partner organization\, ISOCARP calls for outstanding cities and projects from across the world to actively participate in LivCom 2024. As to our member institutions\, you’re more than welcome to nominate cities or represent the cities you’re providing services for to participate.  \nThis year\, ISOCARP intends to work with LivCom Committee in co-launching the Planning & Design Award under the category of Project Award (Environmentally Sustainable Project Award). Targeted at sustainable urban planning\, building design and large-scale residential communities\, the Planning & Design Award is open to the projects with complete planning & design but yet to be built. The Judging Criteria for P&D Award are the same as that used to judge Project Award. \nAs a UN-backed international competition\, the LivCom Awards was launched in 1997 and is the World’s major Awards Competition focusing on International Best Practice regarding the management of the local environment and development\, with further objective of improving the quality of life of individual citizens through the creation of “liveable communities”. Over the past 2 decades\, over 70 countries are represented within the Awards.  \nLivCom has been taking participation and sharing as an important goal. Numerous outstanding winner cities consider participation in LivCom as a significant platform and exchange opportunity for city development and improvement of living quality. Cities will in return learn about the best practices and solutions from other countries facing similar challenges. \nThis year’s Awards is centred on mobilizing local authorities to focus on the management of local environment and development with the theme of building smart\, liveable and sustainable cities. As such\, technologies\, projects and initiatives related to the construction of smart cities are encouraged to be included in the Submission.  \nLivCom Awards are made annually in three categories covering Whole Cities\, Projects and Technologies& Solutions. Entrants of the Whole City Award registered through ISOCARP are required to provide a Registration Form prior to 1 July 2024 and Written Submission (no more than 4500 words and in strict accordance to the Six Judging Criteria) to info@livcomawards.org prior to 1 August 2024. After interim evaluation and review\, the shortlisted entrants are required to organize a delegation to take part in onsite Finals Presentations\, followed by questions asked by the Judges at the Finals organized in Cairo this early November.  \nThe Judging Criteria mainly cover the following 6 aspects： \n\nEnhancement of the Landscapes and Public Spaces\nArts\, Culture and Heritage Management\nEnvironmental Protection and Green Economy\nCommunity Participation and Empowerment\nHealthy Lifestyle\nSustainable Planning and Management Policies\n\nParticipation in LivCom is free of charge. However\, it will be necessary to cover your own travel expenses (flights& accommodation) and personal costs. \nPlease find more on LivCom website: www.livcomawards.org  \nWe look forward to your participation to this well-known Awards Competition and participation in the Awards is surely an investment in the future of a city.
