Katowice Agglomeration – an old industrial Region in Poland

The venue of the pre-congress seminar was chosen purposely, since Upper Silesia is a region comparable to the Ruhr region in many aspects: their industries developed at about thed same pace in 19th century with coal mining and steel production – and in their wake came social problems, local authority reorganization, beginning of regional planning, decline of production, environmental deterioration, leading in the end to the question: what future for industrial regions?
Coastal Area Management: Integrating environmental Objectives into regional Planning

The seminar jointly organised with the International Association of Impact Assessment, focused on coasts and small islands. The three Workshops treated the topics Accessibility, Resources and Tourism. The seminar strongly endorsed the idea that city and regional planning belong together and complement each other.
