During the seconds mission the focus of the UPAT Team was more focussed on specific locations and themes. One of the issues was how to deal with the existing industrial zone with heavy chemical and steel industries that stands in the way of future residential developments in Jiangbei New Area.
Team Leader Dhiru Thadani (India/USA), UPAT Rapporteur Dr. Awais Piracha (Australia), ISOCARP Vice President Martin Dubbeling (the Netherlands), UPAT Team members Dr. Tomasz Madja (Poland), Dr. Liang Huew Wang (Hong Kong/Malaysia) and Mr. Jos Verweij (the Netherlands) emphasised the importance of the themes ‘water’ (abundance, quality, safety), TOD (Transit Oriented Development) and the mezzo and micro scale to make a more people oriented urban design for the Jiangbei New Area. The recommendations of the Nanjing UPAT Team were summarized in Eight Principles for the Future Development of the Jiangbei New Area.
For the second time, the ISOCARP UPAT Team worked together with experts from the Urban Planning Society of China (UPSC). Mr. Shi Nan, being an executive member of both the UPSC and ISOCARP, was a great linkage. The week ended with an inspiring hands-on workshop together with the colleagues of the Nanjing Urban Planning Bureau, the Nanjing Academy of Urban Planning and Design and the Nanjing UPAT Team.
In December this year the UPAT mission will come to an end, presenting the findings of the ISOCARP UPAT Team during a three day conference in Nanjing.
The experts of both ISOCARP and the UPSC are asked to write down their comments and recommendations on the Jiangbei Master Plan in a letter, that will be added to the submission of the Master Plan for approval by the central government.
