ISOCARP’s 60th World Planning Congress Diamond Anniversary Series

d

Dear ISOCARP members and esteemed friends,

This year, we won’t just have the typical single congress, but rather a SPREAD-OUT CONGRESS. As we celebrate 60 years of ISOCARP Congresses, we will mark the occasion with the brand: 60th WORLD PLANNING CONGRESS DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY SERIES.

A Grand and Diverse Congress Unfolds:

  • Geographically spanning both the global north and south
  • Temporally unfolding throughout the year with numerous events
  • Thematically encompassing a wide spectrum from traditional urban planning and design to cutting-edge contemporary and future planning matters

This special year will be marked by two main events:

The 60th World Planning Congress, our classic flagship event, themed “Reinventing the (In)Visible Cities,” to be held in the historic city of Siena, Italy from 8th to 12th October 2024.  The 1st International Conference for New Cities, focusing on “Planning New Regenerative Cities,” to be held in New Clark City, Philippines from 10th to 13th September 2024.

60th ISOCARP World Planning Congress

”Reinventing The (In)visible Cities”

Siena, Italy | 8-12 October 2024

Under the banner of “Reinventing the (In)Visible Cities: From Heritage to Innovation, Forging Pathways to Resilience,” the congress held within Siena’s historic walls seeks to chart a course towards sustainable urban development. Inspired by Calvino’s visionary work in “Invisible Cities,” delegates are encouraged to imagine the unseen and strive for urban utopia. By reimagining city planning and design to accommodate innovation in all fields, we honour Siena’s unique historical significance and focus on topics such as urban regeneration, leveraging cultural heritage for sustainable development, and combating climate change. As we gather within Siena’s timeless embrace, we embark on a journey to revitalize our cities, dismantle systemic inequalities, and create a sustainable urban legacy for generations to come. Through collective vision and shared commitment, we embrace the challenge of reinventing our cities to meet the needs of the present while preserving the essence of our past.

1st International Conference for New Cities

“Planning New Regenerative Cities”

New Clark City, The Philippines, 10-13 September 2024

In a digitalising world with circular economy, expectations for sustainably humanised and healthy cities and environments are increasing. For urban and regional planners, there is an opportunity and professional responsibility to take a more robust approach to cities through new settlements or redevelopment strategies. Although coined 14 years ago by the World Future Council, a German non-profit foundation, regenerative cities are more contextual to be discussed or revisited, especially when we are now under triple planetary crisis and in fast digital transformation. What we can learn from the past, on-going, and near future city development will enrich the current stock of knowledge to navigate our future.

Paper Platform

Every year since 1965, ISOCARP has organized a World Planning Congress combining a unique, triple perspective in theory, policy, and practice. Each Congress has addressed vital topics in the field of city and regional planning.
For this reason, ISOCARP has an incredibly valuable legacy of thousands of contributions, both as research papers and case-study presentations. In 2020 ISOCARP has established a cooperation with RealCorp with the goal of developing a common repository of papers and case studies.

Members’ Area

The Members’ Area on our renovated website intends to be a safe, stable, welcoming and civilized environment where members can interact and express themselves freely and discuss all kinds of topics and issues related to city and regional planning and related to the many and exiting policies, projects, publications and initiatives of both the ISOCARP Society and the ISOCARP Institute. It is better than it ever was, let’s explore and use Members’ Area as a tool to support and celebrate our motto “Knowledge for Better Cities”.
