Jury Report

This year sixteen posters participated in the Routledge competition. The jury found a surprisingly wide variety of outstanding ideas and graphic means of presenting those ideas. Some were packed with information, others were elegantly simple yet provoking. The winning entry, though a difficult decision, was a unanimous choice of all three jurors. The entry was both rich in information and very clear in it’s representation of the urban evolution of a Chinese metropolis, and the key role in which the railways impacted that evolving city.  It went on to demonstrate how a properly designed railway network can re-orient a city and region sustainably for the 21st century. This winning poster provided very useful insights for all Chinese cities during this period of unprecedented urban growth.

Winners

The poster “From Insertion to incorporation. The Hangzhou Example of the transformation of the railway in Chinese urban life” by Shan He, China, Australia, was exceptionally clear in both its historic content and its message for the future. Shan He therefore is the winner of the Routledge Prize 2013.

Congress delegates could also make their choice for the poster they liked most. The public choicewas for Oluwafemi Olajide for his poster on “Rethinking Poverty Alleviation. Poverty alleviation in Lagos’ informal settlements: A sustainable livelihood approach”.
