The eThekwini Municipallity and the City of Durban hosted a UPAT Workshop from 29 April to 5 May 2018. The topic of this UPAT was “Inner City Financial Urban Development Models and Funding” in Durban.
In 2016 the City of Durban hosted the 52nd ISOCARP annual Congress “Cities we Have vs. Cities we Need”. During this congress, Durban presented its Inner City Spatial Framework Plan and Regeneration Strategy and organised technical tours to the inner city precincts. In 2017 the eThekwini Municipality was bestowed with the ISOCARP Award of Excellence as the Durban Inner City Spatial Framework Plan and Regeneration Strategy provides a comprehensive planning strategy for and with the people who live in the city, and that can set an example for many other cities.
The Durban Inner City Team of eThekwini Municipality invited ISOCARP to select a team of experts to assist in the implementation process and financial and cooperation models for the urban transformation and development of the Centrum and Warwick Precincts in Durban Inner City.
The UPAT Team comprised a total of eight ISOCARP members: the Team Leader, the UPAT Rapporteur, total four senior and young planning professionals, the UPAT Program Coordinator and the Vice President UPATs. The Team worked together with a team of planning professionals from the Durban Inner City Team.
All team members have written, illustrated and contributed to a dedicated PLAN Magazine that is now published and available online.
