AboutBrisbane

Technical Tours

Technical Tours: free, first come first served basis.

All of the tours have volunteer Tour Directors most of whom are local planners who are taking on the planning and delivering local tours they believe will be of interest and provide enjoyment for delegates.

Many of our tours are routed along our magnificent Brisbane River ( Brisbane is known as The River City) and all provide themes and points of interest along the routes for you.

The tours will end with the Lord Mayor’s Civic Reception at the very grand and newly restored Brisbane City Hall in the heart of the city.

Tour 1 – Colour Red – Walking – Renewal/revitalisation area

Teneriffe/New Farm located on the Brisbane River provides a good example of successful urban renewal/revitalisation of a former brownfield area close to central Brisbane, facilitated by Brisbane City Council as the regulator and executed by private sector investment. The tour will take in the historic wool stores, wartime naval wharf areas, CSR sugar refinery and The Powerhouse as well as provide an understanding of the ‘tin and timber’ character of Brisbane’s older suburbs.

This walking tour will be spread over 2 – 3 hours on foot over relatively flat terrain.  There will be time for stops along the route plus a refreshment break (at delegates own cost).  Walking fitness is required with walking shoes.  Only light bags.

LIMIT = 25 delegates

Tour 2 – Colour Black – Walking – Legacy site

World-wide there is a current ‘conversation’ about the value that international events such as the Olympic Games, World Expositions etc can realise through legacy. Brisbane’s Southbank is an excellent example of legacy which has provided Brisbane, Queensland and the community with well-loved and used public infrastructure, in what was formerly a blighted area of the city. Kodak Beach is a great example of an innovative thinking and design in the heart of a modern city. The site is also home to Queensland’s premier entertainment and cultural facilities.

This tour will take 2 – 3 hours on foot over relatively flat terrain.  There may be time at leisure at the end of the tour plus there will be an opportunity for a refreshment break (at delegates own cost).  Walking fitness is required with walking shoes. Only light bags.

LIMIT = 25 delegates

Tour 3 – Colour Yellow – Bus – Creating Brisbane’s urban villages

Over recent years Brisbane City Council, later joined by the Queensland Government has planned and collaborated with the private sector to establish/deliver urban villages as nodes/focal points for community identity and well-being in the otherwise homogeneous urban fabric of the city. Part of this collaboration has been the highly successful suburban centres improvement program which has resulted in otherwise failing ‘high street’ local centres being revitalised as meccas for social and community activity.

This tour will take 3 hours in a bus.  There may be one opportunity to get out of the bus and walk around at specific points of interest plus take a refreshment (at the delegates own cost).

LIMIT = 55 delegates

Tour 4 – Colour Blue – Cycle – Cycling to see

Join this cycling tour across some of Brisbane’s inner city bridges and along each bank of the city reach of the Brisbane River. Pass historic sites such as re-used naval stores, the beautiful Kangaroo Point Cliffs passive and active recreational areas, touch Southbank and then pass through the City Gardens and Queensland University of Technology city campus before ending your ride in West End with its multi-cultural and eclectic mix of shops, housing and business.

This tour will take 2 – 3 hours using City Cycle hire bikes (sponsored) primarily on dedicated off-road shared bike/walking paths.  Delegates need to be able to ride a bike.  Riding helmets will be provided and are compulsory in Queensland.  Delegates will be offered a refreshment stop (at own cost) plus short breaks along the route to view points of interest.  A reasonable level of fitness will be required although the route is relatively flat.

LIMIT 25 delegates

Tour 5 – Colour Orange – Walking – Heritage walk

Starting from the Congress venue, you will walk through the edge of the historic Fortitude Valley and on into Spring Hill before descending into the CBD. Brisbane heritage is unlike many other places. Brisbane temperate/subtropical climate means that much of its building stock is generally lightweight construction posing its own particular issues for conservation. See the nations smallest free-standing house as well as appreciating some fine examples of grander architecture and public spaces.

This tour will take 2 – 3 hours on foot across undulating terrain near the city centre.  There will be time for stops along the route plus a refreshment break will be offered (at delegates own cost).  Walking fitness (some short hill climbs) is required with walking shoes.  Only light bags.

LIMIT = 25 delegates

Tour 6 – Colour Green – Bus – Waterways, protecting Moreton Bay

This tour will focus on visiting a number of sites where Brisbane City Council has successful assisted local residents to carry out restoration and improvements along the many creeks and waterways draining the city. The focus of a successful initiative by Council, waterway management has been part of the strategy to improve the water quality of our beautiful Brisbane River and Moreton Bay.

This tour will take 3 hours in a bus.  There may be one opportunity to get out of the bus and walk around at specific points of interest plus take a refreshment (at the delegates own cost).

LIMIT = 55 delegates

Partners can join a River Cruise to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. The cruise boat departs from the heart of the city at 10 a.m. taking you up river along Brisbane’s riverfront, where you can enjoy views of breathtaking modern mansions and historic Queenslander homes. Along the way, you will also come face to face with a unique inner-city colony of fruit bats hidden among the mangroves. You will spend 2,5 hours at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary where you can hand feed kangaroos and emus, experience an authentic Australian sheep dog and sheep shearing show, spy on a shy platypus swimming, see the amazing birds of prey…  and have photos taken cuddling a koala! 3 October:
Partners can choose to explore the city by taking the Brisbane City Sights Tour.  This two hour tour will take you to all the historical and cultural sights of Brisbane, with commentary from the local tour driver. The City Sights hop on hop off tour lets you set your own pace as you can leave and rejoin the tour at any one of the strategically placed stops around Brisbane. Stop a while and visit one of the many parks or the Botanical Gardens, enjoy the views of the City from one of the lookout points, or simply relax in one of the many cafes or restaurants. The tour operates from 9 am to 5 pm.

We would like to mention the possibility to extend the City Sights Tour with a City Cat Ferry Ride along the River. For about 6 AUD you can spend nearly two hours travelling up and down the river enjoying views of the city. The ferry can be accessed at several terminals on the City Sights Tour route OR on completion of the whole tour.
