Urban Safari #1: Entrepreneurs + Architecture
The safari begins with a 15 min walk to and over the temporary structure the Luchtsingel to Hofbogen.
Luchtsingel / Hofbogen
The Luchtsingel (ZUS), is a 390 meter wooden bridge for pedestrians that connects the centre to the north of Rotterdam.
The Luchtsingel has proven to be a triggering force for new developments in a part of the city that had been forgotten for some time. The walk will end at the arches of the former Hofplein Railway viaduct, the Hofbogen. Here you will find dozens of various Rotterdam entrepreneurs, like coffee shops, architects, bakeries and furniture stores.
Zomerhofkwartier (ZOHO)
ZOHO is the Rotterdam ‘Do It Yourself’ quarter: a redefined creative area for living and working nearby the Central Station. It’s a new hotspot run by and for creators in design, art, culture, film, music, media, tech, food, architecture and urban planning.
The ZOHO route passes by creatives like Vers Beton, OMA (Maaskant building), Gare du Nord, The Yellow Building and Mesh Print Club.
Market Hall
Heading towards Noordsingel and Meent this safari continues to Blaak where the controversial Market Hall (MVRDV) will be visited. Art producer Mothership will briefly talk about the huge piece of art on the inside of the building that gives this new iconic building its special character.
Nieuwe Maas / Erasmus Bridge
The safari heads towards Boompjes, the north bank of the city’s river, the Nieuwe Maas. The view shows the Rotterdam skyline, with Noordereiland, The Rotterdam (OMA), the Wilhelminapier and Erasmusbrug (Ben van Berkel).
The Safari also stops at Leuvehoofd, designed by Dutch landscape architect Piet Oudolf.
At the foot of the Erasmus Bridge we will board the Aqualiner (water bus) through Katendrecht and St. Jobshaven to its final stop Heijplaat. Here at the RDM Campus/Submarine Wharf the ISOCARP2015 congress will take place.
