On 19th January 2024, the ISOCARP – International Society of City and Regional Planners and RTPI International jointly hosted the webinar ‘Lessons for Planners from COP28 UAE – moving towards #MultilevelAction’, moderated by Tjark Gall.

During the one hour and a half, international experts discussed what the current international climate debate means for #Cities, how #PlanningPractitioners can contribute to #ClimateAction, and what is next. Debra Roberts highlighted in her keynote the key components, including #Mitigation#Adaptation, the #IPCC reports, and urgency and potential for local action.

This was followed by a roundtable moderated by Victoria Hills MRTPI FICE FRSA MCMI CMgr (RTPI) and the speakers Lea Ranalder (UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme)goksen sahin (ICLEI), Sue Bridge (RTPI), and Martina Juvara (ISOCARP). The discussion covered the current risks and challenges, the potential of interventions, and the role of planners in the process.

Some of the key outputs are the need for 1) #CapacityDevelopment at scale,
2) #LocalGovernments becoming even more active to push their agendas on both national and international scale, and 3) #RemainingHopeful that climate action remains meaningful despite challenging trends.

The session closed with statements from ISOCARP and RTPI’s respective presidents, Pietro Elisei and Sue Bridge, focusing on the roles of professional organisations in supporting and activating their members.
