BACKGROUND

Since 1991 ISOCARP has organized – along with the annual congress – Young Planning Professionals’ workshops, intended to stimulate the professional interests and the development of planning skills of the youngest members of the planners’ family.

This year, two YPP workshops will be offered in conjunction with the 54th ISOCARP congress, one in Bodø and one in Kristiansand, Norway.

YPP WORKSHOP BODØ

Date: 27 September – 1 October 2018
Topic: Cool and Connected: Planning Bodø through Urban Flows

As defined in the agenda of the 54th ISOCARP World Planning Congress, the future of civilisation now more than ever depends on the way we plan and manage our cities and towns. While this agenda calls for aggregate efforts to rethink sustainability, mitigation, resilience and adaptation, how we perceive urban form and urban flows appears as the major strategic fields of action in navigating the challenges of our urban future. Thus, the Young Planning Professionals’ Workshop in Bodø will search for innovative and smart solutions to navigate planning through diverse forms of urban flows; the three case study areas of the workshop below offer the potential to rethink urban flows based on connections and mobilities for a cooler and more connected Bodø.

Application  
The call for workshop participants is open to YOUNG PLANNING PROFESSIONALS – professionals or Masters/Doctorate students in Planning, Urban Design, Policy Development, Geography, Architecture, Social and Political Sciences, or another related discipline. It is intended that the workshop will gather 22 YPPs, who are not older than 35 years and who offer a keen interest in the workshop and upcoming congress theme.

Candidates complying with the above criteria have to submit the Online Application Form compiling the set of documents below:

• Curriculum Vitae pointing out the relevant experience (please use the ISOCARP Template)
• A portrait photograph (5×5 cm, in 300 dpi)
• Recommendation Letter (drafted/signed by an ISOCARP member, employer or university professor)
• A clear scan of the passport (photo page) and information whether you need a visa to Norway, and – in the positive case – which country/city/consulate you will be applying

Contribution and Expenses

Additional chance to participate for YPPs from South Africa:
Following the successful hosting of the 52nd ISOCARP Congress in Durban, South Africa, it was agreed that as part of the legacy of the congress forces be joint with the Legacy Committee of South Africa to motivate young planning professionals to contribute to ISOCARP’s future through alternative ways of resource mobilisation and to stimulate collaborative activities. The 52nd ISOCARP World Congress Legacy Committee will therefore sponsor 2 participants from South Africa to participate in the YPP Workshop in Bodø.

YPP WORKSHOP KRISTIANSAND

Date: 24-29 September 2018
Topic: Cool Planning in Southern Norway New Kristiansand – Development of a sustainable polycentric urban model.

Kristiansand is in the process of amalgamate/merging with two neighbouring municipalities west of Kristiansand: Søgne and Songdalen. This is a huge process involving some 8000 municipal employees and 110.000 inhabitants. The new municipality ‘New Kristiansand’ will be operational from 01.01.2020. The workshop participants will then be looking at: How Kristiansand can develop as a polycentric city? How can these three centres complement and strengthen each other to make the new municipality not only more competitive, but also more dynamic and interesting for the inhabitants? Exploring the different characteristics and identities of the three centres as a basis for developing a polycentric city is important, besides reducing the mental distance between these centres through new ways of transport and communication. The guiding strategic principles include major focus on environmental, economic and social sustainability, climate change and adaptation.
