The Mighty Columbia ~ The Majestic Mountain ~ The Magnificent Pacific!
Long before this territory became part of the U.S., the Hudson’s Bay Company from Canada established a trading post on the banks of the Mighty Columbia. Your adventure begins here with a Park Ranger led tour of the Fort and an explanation of how this served as a true commerce center for the trappers and the immigrants coming to this ‘land of milk and honey!’
Lunch stop will be at a locals’ favorite in Castle Rock, on the way to the Mountain.
On May 18, 1980, Mt. St. Helens forever changed the way she would be looked upon from that day forward. It was on that day…that the top of the mountain would be gone, and a huge crater would be left in its stead. Mud and debris travelled at an amazing speed, destroying everything in its path, including 57 people. Today, you will be able to see the crater, listen to the stories, and perhaps purchase a memento made of the Mountain’s ash.
Love anything made with berries? After dinner, peruse the restaurants displays of the berry products…everything from jams and jellies to syrups, toppings and more!
After your restful sleep with a view of the Mighty Columbia, and a breakfast to start your day, it will begin with the 360 degree view of the city and the bay from the Astoria Column. Even if you don’t climb to the top, the artwork found on the column will be rewarding enough. The river has been plied by many ships and the tales are plentiful, but nowhere can the stories be told as well as in the Columbia River Maritime Museum. Interested in the architecture and planning of Astoria, the next stop will share that information with you and more!
And how did those sea captains live? Very well, I might add, as evident in the Flavel Mansion of which you will be touring with a docent. A peaceful garden, but the story behind it is what makes this place magical. Get those cameras ready as this will be s one of a kind photo op! Take the trolley for $1.00 or walk along on the boardwalk, lunch will be on your own, and there are many eateries to choose from. In 1805-1806, a band of men, 1 woman and a child traversed the wilds from St. Louis, Missouri, following the rivers, searching for the Pacific Ocean.
This afternoon, you will visit the replica of their winter campgrounds ….the Lewis and Clark Expedition and Fort Clatsop. Next stop is the overnight accommodations right on the shores of the Pacific Ocean! Dinner tonight will be at the world famous Moe’s, famous for their seafood, but especially their clam chowder!
When at the beach, do what the beach people do….walk the beach in search of photo ops and treasures! Haystack Rock, one of the most photographed monoliths on the Coast is right there just waiting for you! The Visitor Information Center will provide walking maps of the downtown area with its galleries and unique boutiques! Get ready for a lesson in chocolate making then lunch in a historic log café. On the way back to Portland, we will be stopping at two Oregon icons….one is where they make the best cheese ever, and two, explore rare wartime (WWII) and aviation themed artifacts, including authentic medals and gear. The museum has photos, first hand documentations and uniforms from the war years and beyond.
Early evening, you will be returned to the Doubletree Hotel by Hilton at the Lloyd Center.
