Urban Safari #2: Entrepreneurs + (Multi) cultural

The safari begins with a 10 min walk to the start of the Luchtsingel at Schieblock.

Luchtsingel / Schieblock
The Luchtsingel (ZUS), is a 390 meter wooden bridge for pedestrians that connects the center to the north of Rotterdam.

The Luchtsingel has proven to be a triggering force for new developments in a part of the city that had been forgotten for some time.

The Luchtsingel starts at the Schieblock, a temporary transformed office building in the Rotterdam Central District. The ambition was to create a vibrant city laboratory with interdisciplinary organisations working on new ways to transform the city.

Here we will visit amongst others the Dak Akker, the first roof in the area that produces fruits and vegetables.

Didden Village
The safari continues to the west of Rotterdam. The first stop will be Didden Village.

This extension, a rooftop house was the first project MVRDV realised in its hometown, Rotterdam. Situated on top of an existing monumental house and atelier, the bedrooms are shaped as separate houses, optimizing the privacy of every member of the family. The houses are distributed in such a way that a series of plazas, streets and alleys appear as a mini-village on top of the building, a kind of blue heaven for its inhabitants.

Old West / Centre-West
Passing through characteristic streets of the west of Rotterdam like Graaf Florisstraat and Middellandstraat the safari continues to the neighbourhood called Old West, a particularly multicultural district with many local exotic shops ‘from wigs to food’, Chinatown and contemporary pop-up shops.

The safari takes us to Nieuwe Binnenweg and the Museum Park, passing by the cultural hotspots of the city. It will go through the Museumpark and Kunsthal (OMA) and continues through Westzeedijk to go St. Jobshaven. At St. Jobshaven we will board the Aqualiner (water bus) which will take us to its final stop Heijplaat. Here at the RDM Campus / Submarine Wharf the ISOCARP2015 congress will take place.
