Urban Safari #3: Cultural

The third safari will be a safari by foot and boat (no bikes!). It starts with a walk over the new Rotterdam Central Station square (Team CS, a cooperation between Benthem Crouwel Architekten, Meyer & Van Schooten Architecten, and West 8) in walking direction to the Westersingel from which it will visit the Theatre Square (West 8).

Theatre Square / Lijnbaan
At the Theatre Square our guide gives a brief talk about the square. The Theatre Square is a car and bicycle-free square, surrounded by numerous cultural institutions. It is slightly elevated and intended as an urban podium for the city.

Next to it we visit the Lijnbaan. This is the main pedestrian shopping street with housing blocks in the centre of Rotterdam. The Lijnbaan (Van den Broek en Bakema) is one of the architectural icons of the post-war reconstruction.

The route continues along the right side of the Westersingel along the sculpture trail until the corner of Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, the museum of contemporary art, located at the Museum Park.

Witte de Withstraat / Centre
The safari turn left to the bustling Witte de Withstraat in which a high density of gastronomic hotspots, shops and art galleries can be found. Witte de With Street is the vibrant cultural nightlife street of Rotterdam.

The Safari continues to Schiedamse Vest, after which it passes the outdoor Harbour Museum (with a view on the Wijnhaven) to arrive at the Erasmus Bridge.

The Safari also stops at Leuvehoofd, designed by Dutch landscape architect Piet Oudolf.

At the foot of the Erasmus Bridge we will board the Aqualiner (water bus) through Katendrecht and St. Jobshaven to its final stop Heijplaat. Here at the RDM Campus / Submarine Wharf the ISOCARP2015 congress will take place.
