Mayors’ Summit

Following Paris, Athens and Moscow, this year Istanbul is the venue for 4th “Summit of the Mayors of the World,” which will be attended by over 40 mayors from all around the world. Since this important event that brings together many city leaders coincides with the 42nd ISoCaRP Congress, the Mayor of Greater Istanbul, Mr. Kadir Topbas, offered to invite Mayors of several major metropolitan cities from different parts of the world to spare their time from the World Summit and to take floor at the ISoCaRP Congress and share with us the experience of their cities from the perspective of the ISoCaRP Congress theme. ISoCaRP and the LOC are grateful to Mr. Kadir Topbas and have gladly accepted this offer which enables ISoCaRP to hold its own Mayors Summit for the 3rd time this year.

Istanbul provides a perfect setting to discuss the ramifications of integrative and disintegrative forces that nowadays shape our cities and the challenges and opportunities they bring about for planners, urbanists, politicians alike. We hope that this year’s Mayors Summit will provide yet another opportunity for a fruitful exchange and collaboration among the city leaders and ISoCaRP members.

Although the 4th Summit of the Mayors of the World was cancelled, the ISoCaRP Mayors’ Summit took place on 16 September 2006.

The following Mayors gave presentations:

  • Dr Kadir Topbas, Mayor of Istanbul
  • Dr Wolfgang Schuster, Mayor of Stuttgart, Germany
  • Cllr Andrew Arnold, Dep. Mayor Cape Town/ Mr Achmat Ebrahim, City Manager Cape Town, South Africa. Download: “Planning for Future Cape Town“.
