ISOCARP is pleased to invite interested professionals to attend the International Workshop “City, Urban Planning and Qanat”, organized on the 10th of May 2023 by our partners the Tehran Construction Engineering Organisation (TCEO), in collaboration with the International Center on Qanats and Historic Hydraulic Structures (ICQHS) and UNESCO.

The full-day workshop (09:00 – 16:00 Iran time) will start with presentations delving into the effects of the Qanat on the urban planning of Iranian cities, in particular Yazd, followed by an interactive workshop (11:00 – 16:00) promoting the track in the historical area of the Yazd city. Leveraging on the potential of recovering and reusing hydraulic structures such as water mills and reservoirs, the participants will have the opportunity to contribute and explore possibilities for urban interventions destined to improve the attractiveness of these points for visitors, with the following purposes:

  • Improving the safety of the city based on the Qanat technology
  • Reviewing the effect of Qanat on the urban morphology of cities
  • Reviewing the effect of urban land uses on the quality of underground water
  • Identifying the role of Qanat in increasing the identity of Islamic-Iranian cities
  • Identifying the role of the urban planner on improving the natural environment conditions
  • Increasing the general information about urban planning principles and clean technologies.
